Make the shortlist practical first
Write down the constraints that would rule a place in or out: the property type, your weekly budget, transport access and the facilities you use. The app does not assign a livability score or infer what makes an area right for you.
Search for a locality or postcode, then open its council and city context. Saved cities stay in your current browser, so you can return to a shortlist without creating an account.
A suburb name and a postcode are different areas
ABS localities, statistical areas, councils and Postal Areas are different geographies. A locality can cross council boundaries, and several localities can share a postcode. Postal Areas approximate postcodes; they are not an exact map of all postal delivery codes.
The app uses a consistent ABS 2021 geographic edition. A locality page explains which postcode its rental observations describe. If you choose another mapped postcode, you are looking at that postcode’s advertised market, not a new suburb-only median.
Compare the same category and period
Use house against house, or all units against all units. Check observation dates before interpreting a price difference. If one series is unavailable, leave the gap visible and explore another mapped postcode rather than treating it as a zero.
Council summaries are population-weighted samples of up to four mapped postcode series. They are derived reference figures, not measured council medians. A partial sample can miss parts of the council, so inspect its coverage before drawing a conclusion.
Turn the research into a personal scenario
Once you have a shortlist, use the rent calculator with your own income and household contributions. For a purchase, enter an actual listing price, deposit and financing assumptions instead of substituting a city-wide figure for a specific home.
The map, comparisons and calculators answer different questions. Keep your actual property evidence alongside the broader market context, and revisit the source dates when you return to your research.
