AusHousing Trends is a free research tool for exploring Australian housing data. This is how the figures are sourced, presented and kept up to date.
Rent observations come from SQM Research. Capital cities use the stated SQM city regions. Regional summaries cover a named postcode, not the entire city. All-house and all-unit series are supported; apartment and unit views share the all-units series.
Monthly chart points average available weekly observations. City annual rent changes use the combined series where reported. Vacancy carries its own source period.
Read SQM’s rental methodologyCapital-city sale medians use ABS dwelling transfer statistics for established houses and attached dwellings. Regional summaries use SQM postcode asking prices. Advertised and achieved prices remain separately labelled.
The figures can cover different periods and areas. A quotient of unrelated rent and buy observations is not presented as an observed property yield. A missing category is not estimated from another one.
ABS dwelling statisticsBoundaries and allocations use the ABS ASGS 2021 edition. Mesh Block allocations connect localities, councils, statistical areas and Postal Areas; 2021 Census population counts supply weights. Postal Areas approximate postcodes and some delivery codes are absent.
Council summaries are weighted samples of up to four mapped postcode series, not council medians. City map extents are navigation areas, not official metropolitan membership definitions. Display boundaries are simplified and are not suitable for legal boundary decisions.
ABS geographic definitionsSuccessful market-source caches refresh after 24 hours on access. A failed refresh retains the previous successful response; a first-time failure shows unavailable data. Checking a source does not create a newer observation.
Publication periods and retrieval dates are shown separately. Public source formats can change and require maintenance. Geographic editions and duty schedules need reviewed updates; the NT duty schedule remains a clearly labelled historical 2019 scenario.
